Horizontal Gas Rigs: 2011-2020
This post is a follow-up to last week’s Oil Edition.
The map depicts the number of gas-focused horizontal rigs per county. It highlights each week of the Baker Hughes rig report since it started breaking out the information in more detail.
Unlike the oil rigs, the gas rigs have shown a steady decline from 2011 to 2020. There was a small recovery following the down-turn in 2016, but not to the scale of the oil rigs. However, the raw numbers are misleading over this time, operators considerably increased drilling efficiency and recovery. But, consistently low prices have primarily consolidated drilling into two areas, the Haynesville and Appalachia.
